Samsung Unveils Gear S3 Smart Watch With GPS and LTE

August 31, 2016

Just a week (literally) ahead of Apple’s planned September 7th event, Samsung has unveiled its latest and greatest smartwatch, the Gear S3. Samsung’s newest smartwatch comes in two models: A “Classic” model equipped with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and a “Frontier” model that features LTE connectivity.

Each model features an AMOLED display and has something I’m hoping comes to the Apple Watch: An always-on mode.

Both Gear S3 models have a large 46mm bezel built using steel and include the rotating bezel that was first introduced in the Gear S2. The Gear S3 uses standard 22mm watch bands and has a 380mAH battery that apparently is able to last up to four days between charges.

Samsung Gear S3 is available in two bold designs to suit different users’ lifestyles: frontier and classic. Inspired by the active explorer, the Gear S3 frontier evokes a rugged outdoor look with an enduring style that blends form and function. The frontier was designed to perform in any setting or environment – whether business or leisure. The Gear S3 classic pays homage to the minimalist, elegant style found in the most iconic timepieces. The classic was designed with meticulous attention to detail — with its size and shape chosen to attain the same consistency and balance of a well-crafted luxury watch.

Other features include IP-68 water resistance, support for Samsung Pay, a barometer/speedometer, and it uses Corning’s new Gorilla Glass SR+, which is said to be super scratch resistant.

Samsung hasn’t unveiled pricing yet or a specific release date, but I would think that you’d be able to get your hands on one sometime this fall.

Your move, Apple.
