In 2 Years, TAG Heuer Will Let You Trade in their Smartwatch for a Mechanical Watch

November 9, 2015

Yes, that headline is correct.

TAG Heuer believes that its smartwatch will be outdated in about 2 years and because the company believes this so strongly, they are giving its connected watch owners a chance to swap out their smartwatch at the end of its 2 year warranty period for a TAG Heuer mechanical watch for an additional… wait for it… $1500.

Yes, that means that you can buy a TAG Heuer smartwatch today for $1500 and if you don’t like it you can buy a mechanical one for another $1500, making your grand total of ownership to $3000, basically the price of a Tag Heuer mechanical watch today.

What’s incredibly odd about this proposition is that TAG Heuer was the one touting that its watch would have upgradable components and would last much longer then we expect. Now they’re saying that you can upgrade your smartwatch to effectively a dumb watch? Odd.

It seems obvious to me that while the outside design of the TAG Heuer Connected watch looks nice, everything else about the idea is a total mess.
