TAG Heuer Officially Unveils its Connected Smartwatch

November 9, 2015

TAG Heuer has officially unveiled its connected watch, a $1,500 Android Wear smartwatch made in partnership with Google and Intel. The watch is modeled after the company’s Carrera model, a model that dates back to the early 1960s.

The watch comes in at 46.2mm across and 12.8mm thick, which is quite big, suggesting it’s mostly aimed for men. The watch is made of titanium making it ultra-light and has a black carbon coating that gives the watch a very traditional look. In fact, from a distance, you might not realize that it’s a digital watch.

Like the Apple Watch, the Tag Heuer smartwatch requires BlueTooth to connect to your smartphone. It has built-in Wi-fi and 4GB of on-board storage for things such as apps and watch faces. It has “basic fitness tracking” (whatever that means), as well as built-in gyroscope sensors. Unfortunately the watch does not come in an LTE variant and does not have GPS built-in, meaning that you can’t expect to get accurate data while jogging if you don’t have you phone with you. Finally, the watch is charged via a USB cradle and is claimed to get “up to” 30 hours of battery life with normal use.

TAG is also offering exclusive features that other Android Wear smartwatches do not get such as TAG Heuer faces, special timing apps, and other apps related to sports such as golf. Will this be enough to get people to spend $1500? We’re not sure.

The TAG Heuer smartwatch is available for sale today from the company’s website and a handful of luxury boutiques around the world.
