Tim Cook Hints That Apple Watch is Already a Billion Dollar Business
While Apple isn’t breaking out sales of Apple Watch for “competitive reasons”, Tim Cook gave us a glimpse of how the Apple Watch has sold over the past three months during today’s earnings call. According to Cook, it seems plausible that Apple sold over 3 million Apple Watches with revenue well over $1 billon dollars.
It’s important to remember that Apple has decided to group the Apple Watch into its “Other” category which also includes a variety of Apple’s products and services including Apple TV, Beats, iPod’s, and accessories. For the third quarter, the company reported $2.641 billion in revenue in “Other”, which is up roughly 56% compared to the last quarter. Cook also said that the Apple Watch accounted for 100% growth in “Other” category.
Depending on the average selling price (ASP) of the Apple Watch, it’s possible that the company has sold 3 million units. If the ASP is roughly $500, then 3 million units seems likely. If the ASP is higher, like say $600, then it’s possible that units sold are closer to 2 – 2.5 million.
Another interesting tidbit was Cook’s comments on Watch sales since launch. According to Cook, the Apple Watch sold better in June than it did in April or May. Slice Intelligence essentially said the opposite just a few days ago.
Either way, we still don’t know much about Apple Watch sales. At least not yet. I’m sure analysts will be trying to reverse engineer the numbers as quickly as possible. When they do, we’ll update you with more info. Stay tuned!
