12 Things You Should Know About the Apple Watch

July 8, 2015

Tobias van Schneider has written a great piece on 12 things you should know about the Apple Watch. His basic conclusion is that “If someone would take the Apple Watch away from me, I would not miss it.”

That’s fair to say given all the reasons he’s listed, but I feel like some of his complains are not taking into account the future of Apple Watch. Take for example where he called the Digital Crown a gimmick:

The digital crown on the Apple Watch feels more like a nostalgic element trying to imitate the traditional watch, but with no real purpose. But regardless, it doesn’t hurt to have it on there.

While I do think there is a bit of nostalgia there, I think he’s missing the true value of not having to use your finger to scroll and adjust things. Remember the demo Kevin Lynch did where he adjusted the temperature of his Volkswagen right from his Watch? That type of interaction would be far worse it was only touchscreen. Again, the Apple Watch’s display is super small and it’s likely not going to grow by that much, ever. To me the Digital Crown is awesome and as app developers start adding uses for it, we’re going to learn to accept its value.

Here’s another complaint I don’t quite understand:

The only problem is that sometimes you will forget charging your watch, which will render it useless for the next day of course. Forgetting about charging your watch once will start the cycle of forgetting it again. You will end up switching to your old watch as a backup, and as a result the Apple Watch will go unused for a week.

Do that many people really forget to charge their Apple Watch? Seems like it’s easier for me to remember to do that than it is to charge my phone. Why? Because I’m wearing my Watch all day. I only take it off to charge it. The phone, however, is not being worn and I often don’t need to charge it at night. Sometimes it’s at 80% because I’m throwing it on and off the charger during the day. I don’t do that with the Watch at all.

Here’s one I completely agree with:

After using the Watch for a couple weeks, I noticed that I never or very rarely use the apps screen. There can be many reasons to this, but mainly you just don’t need it right now. This might change over time when better apps are coming to the market, but in general I believe the Apple Watch has it’s greatest potential with what Apple calls “Glances”.

I feel like someone has said this one before…

Feel free to head over and read Schneider’s full post. Let us know what you think too. What do you agree and disagree with?
