Realm: Developers Losing Interest in the Apple Watch
Realm, a company known for providing mobile databases to around App developers, told Business Insider that its stats show that developers are beginning to lose interesting in developing for the Apple Watch.
According to Realm, for every 1,000 new iOS apps being built only 1 Apple Watch app is being built.
On a weekly basis we’re seeing very few Watch apps, compared to iOS apps,” says VP Tim Anglade. “For every 1,000 new iOS apps being built, there are 10 tvOS apps and maybe 1 Watch app.
Ouch!
Angled believes that unless the Apple Watch can truly run apps natively of the iPhone, which it cannot fully do at the moment, developers will continue to lose interesting in creating for the watchOS platform.
This isn’t all that surprising to be honest, and we’re hoping that watchOS 3 really fixes some of the problems that Apple debuted with the Apple Watch, particularly around software. If Apple can improve how apps work and perhaps allow for third-party Watch faces, I think they’ll be in a position to lure back developers to developing for the Apple Watch.
Recent stats show that the Apple Watch is still the best selling smartwatch when compared to those made by the likes of Google, Samsung, and Pebble.
We’re only two weeks away from WWDC. Here’s hoping Apple has some sweet plans for watchOS 3.
