The Apple Watch Has Helped Make Me A Better Cook

August 12, 2015

One of my favorite things to do is cook. I love making food because to me, it’s an expression of art. From combining textures and tastes to preparing the visual look of a meal before it’s eaten, being something of a chef has always interested me. Never in my wildest dreams did I think the Apple Watch would help make be a better one.

But it has.

Whether you like to cook or not, one of the most important factors in making good food is timing. This matters so much because if you do not time things precisely, your hard work can become undercooked, overcooked, or even worse, inedible. This is where the form of the Apple Watch really comes into play. Because it’s literally strapped to my wrist, I can set timers and alarms in ways that would take far longer on my iPhone or even a stand-alone kitchen timer. When cooking multiple dishes that require different amounts of time, I can simply say “Hey Siri, set an alarm for me to take out the Lamb in two hours” followed by something like “Remind me to check on the rice in 10 minutes.” Both alarms are now automatically set and I’m reminded accordingly to check on both.

It gets even better if you have devices that have Bluetooth built in and can send you notifications right to you wrist. Take the iGrill 2 for example. The iGrill 2 is a wirelessly connected thermometer that is able to use my Watch to give me remote temperature readings in real time. Further, it’s capable of giving me multiple readings from different foods, and it will even ping me when those are within 10 degrees of my target temperature. Before, if I wanted to smoke brisket for 8 hours, I’d have to check on it every little so often to make sure the temperature was staying level. Now, I can look at my Watch and see how it’s doing. And with notifications, I’ll get a tap on my wrist whenever a temperature change requires my attention. It’s going to be even better when I can actually see the temperature outside the app when custom complications hit in just a few months. I can’t wait!

This is just the beginning, too. As more of our appliances get things like Bluetooth and are able to tell us when our food or drink is ready via time and temperature, the Apple Watch will become even more useful. And imagine the professionals running commercial kitchens, constantly needing timely reminders about orders. The Apple Watch has the potential to be a game changer there as well.

Food is, without question, one of things that is universally needed and loved by almost everyone. As crazy as it sounds, the Apple Watch has the ability to make our food even better. And that is something I welcome with open arms.

Because you really do need two hands to pull a big pot roast out of the oven.
