5 Small Ways The Apple Watch Has Become The Only Watch I Want To Wear
In the 15 years or so that I’ve been wearing a watch, I’ve been fortunate enough to own a variety of watches from ones that cost less than $50 bucks to ones that have cost more than a really good laptop, but none of them have been able to do the things the Apple Watch can do. It wasn’t until recently that I started thinking all the small things that I really enjoy about the Apple Watch and why I can’t go a day without using it. Below I’ve listed 5 small ways in which the Apple Watch has helped me in ways that I never thought would be possible.
Morning Coffee: Each morning I brew my own cup of coffee using either a French press or an Aeropress. When brewing coffee, it’s recommended that you don’t let the coffee steep for more than 4 minutes. I use the Timer Complication to set a 4 minute timer each morning so that I don’t have to stand by my coffee while it works its magic. Doing this right on my wrist within has made my coffee taste so much better.
Cooking Sous Vide: Since we’re on the subject of the Time Complication, cooking Sous Vide is a process in which you cook food in heated water bath using a circulator and a vacuum sealer. It may sound complex (it’s really not), but when cooking proteins such as fish, chicken, or meat, this technique yields incredible results. It also requires that the food be taken out in a certain range of time. I’m using the Anova Circulator with Bluetooth which lets me know when my food is ready by sending a push notification. Normally I would need to have my phone one me, but getting buzzed on the wrist to let me know my food is done is amazing.
Working Out: Working out is super fun with this Watch. While I have to admit, I never used Fitbit or anything like it, the visual element of knowing how many calories I’ve burned and if I’ve hit my goals is awesome. Between the Watch, the Health app and my new scale, I’m now able to get a much more comprehensive understanding of how my body is doing. I’ve lost some weight too!
Important Calls: I really dislike sounds. In fact, I have my phone on silent at all times no matter where I am. I dislike sounds so much that I even turn off vibration in many of my apps because the buzzing simply irritates me. Because of this, the Apple Watch is quite literally the perfect notification mechanism. Now when I get a phone call or an important text message, I get a light tap on my wrist and I can attend to it immediately. No more missing phone calls or text messages from my wife. This makes her especially happy
Deliveries: I order a lot of stuff on Amazon. And because I live in an apartment complex, many of my packages are left at the front office where I have to go pick them up before they close at 6PM. Because I have orders that come in frequently, I’m never really keeping track of what is suppose to come in and when. However, because I have Amazon notifications turned on, I’m always alerted (quietly) when my package has been delivered. Once I know, I head over to the office and pick it up. It’s a small thing, but man is it awesome being told when they’re. Helps me be more efficient throughout my day.
There are many more reasons I love wearing this Watch and I suspect they will grow when watchOS 2 hits this coming fall. However, even the Watch as it is today has become something of extreme value to me. No other watch can do what I mentioned above. Imagine what this thing will be capable of in just a few years time.
I can’t wait.
