iFixit Apple Watch Teardown In Progress

April 24, 2015

As we speak, iFixit is performing their long-awaited Apple Watch teardown. Live updates from the site indicate that Apple Watch is every bit as tightly-packed and complex as expected, simultaneously underscoring the wearable’s difficult production issues and hammering home the notion that — modular or not — the thing’s not likely to be component upgradeable.

A few tidbits from the teardown so far:

  • The 38mm Apple Watch display (272 x 340 pixels) has 290 ppi.
  • The 42mm Apple Watch display (312 x 390 pixels) has 302 ppi.
  • Sport Band clasp instructions are printed on the underside of the elastomer strap.
  • The reported hidden diagnostic port is covered in the consumer version’s Band slot. There’s no word yet on whether or not this will be user accessible.
  • Bands utilize spring-loaded metal pegs to mount to the Apple Watch chassis. There don’t appear to be any magnets or proprietary “Band chips” here.
