Apple Watch Is The Rising Tide That Lifts All Smartwatches

March 23, 2015

Matt Birch:

Apple entered the cell phone market in 2007 with a modest goal of capturing 1% of the overall market. Today they hold 14.8% of the smart phone market and modern smart phones command almost all cell phone sales. They entered the tablet market when nobody was buying tablets, but they have since sold over 200 million tablets.

Matt is onto something, but I think the rising tide will have consequences.

I’ve said this before, but I really do believe that Apple Watch is iPod 2.0. What that means is that I believe there’s a strong possibility that the Apple Watch becomes the de facto “smartwatch” of choice for most people. People will see other watches and just think “Apple Watch” first.

We saw this with the iPod and we see it now with the iPad. Sure, there are other tablets out there (just like there were other MP3 players), but ask someone on the street to name an MP3 player other than iPod or a tablet other than iPad, and I’m sure you’ll be met with a pause. Or complete silence.

Yes, the Apple Watch will raise the tide for all smartwatches, but most of them will still sink.
