Survey Says Most Want Stainless Apple Watch, Expect It To Cost $500 Or Less

March 4, 2015

Reddit user Kiggsworthy is conducting an open survey over at /r/Apple about public interest in Apple Watch. Dozens of data points are being covered, and it is thoroughly comprehensive. 1533 respondents have been tallied up so far, and the results are enlightening. A few highlights (accurate at time of publication):

  • 76% of respondents don’t currently own a wearable device of any kind.
  • 46% of respondents plan to purchase Apple Watch, while only 16% say they definitely won’t.
  • 42% of buyers plan to purchase the stainless version.
  • 40% of buyers plan to purchase the Sport version.
  • 63% of buyers agree that the expected one-day battery life is “acceptable” or better.
  • 73% of buyers say they “won’t leave home without” Apple Watch.

Regarding the “trim” levels customers are looking forward to buying, it’s important to point out that almost 75% of respondents favoring the Sport model claim to do so out of price considerations alone. Additionally, when asked how much they think the stainless steel version will sell for, 68% believe it will cost $500 or less. If Apple analyst John Gruber is right with his $1000+ predictions, these people will not be happy.

As for use cases, there is a more even spread. 22% are primarily excited that Apple Watch will allow them “to perform some actions just by interacting quickly with [their] wrist,” 17% are most interested that the wearable “will show notifications” from their iPhones, and another 17% think that fitness tracking is the biggest deal.
