Tim Cook Takes Showers With His Apple Watch
French site iGen is reporting that Tim Cook told an employee in the Kurfürstendamm Apple Store in Berlin that he wears his Apple Watch all the time–”even in the shower.” While Apple has previously mentioned water-resistance, and stated that the S1 innards are “completely encapsulated in resin,” this is the first time we’ve had a specific indication on what that means in practice.
If true, this is a pretty big deal. Even though you won’t be able to take your Apple Watch under water, the fact that it will be resistant to as much water as you would encounter in the shower suggests you really don’t need to worry about water damage from normal environmental exposure.
How much of this is actually due to the microchip being “encapsulated in resin,” however, is debatable, as the S1 SiP is far from the only thing inside Apple Watch that needs to be water resistant. More likely, the case construction itself is sufficiently seamless to prevent water droplets from getting in. Who knows, without the moving parts of the Digital Crown or “Friends” button, maybe you could even swim with Apple Watch. Maybe version two or three will put the screws to the as-yet unthreatened dive watch and “rugged” watch segments.
