HISTORY Here, a free app from A&E Television Networks Mobile, shows you historical points of interest all around you. History buffs, explorers, and tourists alike will appreciate this app.

When you open the app on your Apple Watch, you will see the closest historic location. Keep swiping left to see more locations of historical significance, progressively farther from your current location. When you see one that catches your interest, tap on it. You’ll get the full name, address, and about a paragraph of information about it. Tap “read more” to get more details about the spot. You also have the option to bookmark it for later perusal. Additionally, there is a map that shows the precise location. Tap on the map to be taken to the Maps app and given directions to your point of interest. There is a fun little Easter Egg of sorts. If you use Force Touch inside the app, you will see the option: “Surprise Me!” Tap it to be taken to a random historical point of interest, rather than swiping through your options in order of distance. When I tried it, I was given a location 393 miles away, so I’d consider that more of a trivia tidbit than a useful function.

You can set notifications to alert you of nearby historic locations, and you can specify if you want to be notified only when you are walking. After all, notifications while you are driving can be distracting rather than helpful.

This is a neat app, definitely worth checking out. It’s a great way to explore your own community and well as invaluable while traveling. HISTORY Here is free on the App Store.
