Streets 3 for Street View Offers Panoramic Street Views and More

June 30, 2016

Streets 3 for Street View is the only app I’ve found that gives you a street view panorama of anyplace in the world on your Apple Watch.

When you open the app, you have four choices: Search, Favorites, Recents, and Gallery. The first three are just what you’d expect. Search is conducted by voice, and I found it to work well for me. Favorites houses whatever sites you’ve favorited. You can favorite any location right on the Apple Watch with a force press. Recents is a list of sites you’ve looked at recently. Gallery is a list of sites, curated by the developer and divided by category. I’m not sure how useful that function is, other than just being an interesting way to browse the world from your wrist.

Once you choose a site, you’ll be taken to a 360° panoramic photo of it. I tested it on Times Square in New York City, Six Flags amusement park, the Grand Canyon, an aquarium in Florida, a church in Mexico, and my own home, among other spots. In all cases, it worked, and I got a kick out of seeing them on my Apple Watch. Twist the digital crown up or down to move the photo right or left, respectively.

At this point, the app is more novelty than useful tool on the Apple Watch. But I can’t think of any other app where you can search for any place in the world and then see it on your Apple Watch just seconds later.

For full functionality, you’ll need to pull out your iPhone. There, you can drop pins, share panoramic street views, and be taken to the Maps app for directions to the location of your choice. There is a lot to discover in the app on your iPhone, and it’s far more than a novelty there. I spoke to the developer, and he hopes to add directions to the Apple Watch in a future update.

Streets 3 for Street View is $1.99 on the App Store.
