Get the Approximate Time Spelled out in a Complication with Roughly

April 29, 2016

I am always on the lookout for new and interesting apps, particularly those with complications. I like to change up the look of my favorite faces and get different information depending on my needs that day. I know there are other Apple Watch owners who enjoy some novelty as well.

Roughly is a one-trick pony app that might be just the one you’ve been looking for. Not everyone prefers to think about or read time as an analogue dial, or even as precise digital numbers. Some people think about time as an approximate thing, such as quarter to five, or half-past two, and must translate it in their heads when reading time in a precise format. There is even a condition called dyscalculia, which affects one’s ability to read time.

If reading time spelled out is your preference for any reason, Roughly is the app for you. It is a complication on the Apple Watch, nothing more. If you look at the app on the iPhone, or tap the complication on your watch, you will only get instructions on how to use the complication.

You can only use it in the larger complication spots, of course. Roughly is accessible exclusively on the Utility, Mickey, and Modular faces. I find it particularly useful on the Mickey and Utility faces, since it’s quicker to read than the hands of an analogue watch face.

Some people might just like using Roughly for a change of watch face scenery. It’s a different way to think about time, especially for the generation raised on digital timepieces.

It’s a charming app that does just one thing and does it well. Roughly is free on the App Store.
