Use the Digital Crown to Break Into a Virtual Safe

April 29, 2016

The Digital Crown is a pretty large part of the Apple Watch, and yet there isn’t much we can do with it. I rarely find myself using it, except to tap it to go back to the watch face.

Break the Safe is a safe-cracking game that isn’t a clone of an old game. It’s truly unique to the Apple Watch and can only be played on the Apple Watch, not the iPhone. It takes full advantage of the Digital Crown and the Apple Watch’s haptic feedback.

Gameplay is pretty much what you’d expect from watching caper movies and TV shows. You know, the ones where the cat burgler uses a stethoscope to listen to the safe’s dial. The subtle clicks and vibrations tell him or her when to turn the dial the other way. Clockwise, counterclockwise, and clockwise again: Voila! The safe is opened.

Break this Safe

Intuitively, you will start turning the dial clockwise with the Digital Crown. That’s right – keep doing that until you feel a slight vibration telling you you’re getting close. Slow down. A stronger vibration means you got that number, turn the dial the other way. Get all three numbers correct, and you win.

This is a hard game. Frustratingly hard, to me. I don’t personally like games where I cannot score at all. And I could not score with this game. But I do give the developer credit for doing something new and accessing features of the Apple Watch that other developers haven’t. We need more developers pushing boundaries and exploring all of the Apple Watch’s possibilities. This game is definitely worth checking out.

Are you up for a challenge? Give Break the Safe a try. It’s free on the App Store.
