This CoWatch Smartwatch Puts Amazon's Alexa on Your Wrist

April 20, 2016

Earlier this week a Chinese company called iMCO launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo for a watch they’re calling the CoWatch, a new round Android-based smart watch with an aim to put Amazon’s voice assistant Alexa right on your wrist.

The Watch, which early backers can get for as low as $179, features the typical hardware you’d see on today’s Android smartwatches including a Dual-core processor, Super-AMOLED display, a Heart rate sensor, vibration motor, Bluetooth audio, and water resistance capabilities. But of course the big feature is that the CoWatch will be able to talk to Amazon’s awesome voice assistant Alexa.

While demos of the smartwatch showcasing Alexa are still limited and is not truly hands free, the idea of having Alexa on your wrist is promising given that the the company pretty much allows anyone to tap into the Alexa API. Have a question? Ask Alexa. Want to control items in your house? Ask Alexa.

This is exactly the sort of thing Apple needs to do with the Watch. To me, the future of the watch is as much about voice as it is about Health. People don’t want to tap and press their screen. They want to simply ask it or command it to do something and have it respond.

Here’s hoping that a Siri API makes its way to WWDC 2016.
