Apple Watch Predicted to Capture 50% Market Share in 2016 According To IDC
The Apple Watch has managed to capture just over 75 percent of the smartwatch market, but according to research firm IDC, that number is expected to drop in the coming years as more competitors make their way into the category.
IDC predicts that the Apple Watch will lose marketshare to competing platforms over the next 4-5 years as Tizen, Android Wear and Pebble continue to gain steam.
It’s important to note that the decline in marketshare will not be due to lower sales of Apple Watch. IDC predicts that Apple will sell 14 million units in 2016 and as many as 31 million units in 2020. To put things in perspective, Apple sold just under 12 million units during the first 8 months of its availability.
IDC believes that Android Wear will remain in second place as the most popular smartwatch platform through 2020. Other platforms that are predicted to be popular include Pebble OS, Tizen and other watch platform that are expected to come in the next few years.
