Give your Sonos system a boost with ZonePlay for Apple Watch

February 22, 2016

Over the weekend, I bit the bullet and picked up my first Sonos speaker. I’d had my eye on the product line for a long time, and the purchase was a great one: the speaker sounds better than any I’ve used yet, and the iOS app makes using the speaker a fantastic experience (for reasons I’m not going to outline here). One problem with this application, however, is that it doesn’t offer watchOS compatibility … yet. For now, owners of the Apple Watch can use a workaround in the form of a third-party piece of software called ZonePlay, and this can be yours right now.

ZonePlay is available for $3.99, and it’s optimized for the iPhone/iPod touch (as well as for the Apple Watch). On your wrist, it offers access to a configured Sonos system, allowing users of the Apple Watch to choose content from your music library, to manage queues and playlists, and to launch radio stations.

For now, however, the app has proved most useful as a simple remote for Sonos, allowing me to adjust the volume and pause playback without having to use my iPhone (or, dare it be said, actually walk over to where the speaker is). Until the Sonos Controller iOS app is updated with watchOS support — something that could happen in the not-too-distant future, anyway — ZonePlay is the next best thing for Sonos-owning Apple Watch wearers like me.

So, as mentioned, you can download ZonePlay right now: it’s available for $3.99, and brings easy-to-configure Sonos support to the watchOS platform.
