Is The Apple Watch Sport Better Than Other Models?
YouTuber PHOTOTRISTAN makes the assertion that the Apple Watch Sport is better than the other models for five reasons in this video.
Here are his five reasons, along with my own observations. I owned a Sport for two weeks before returning it and purchasing a stainless steel version myself.
1. Ion-X glass crystal is clearer than sapphire crystal.
This is objectively true, albeit just slightly. The only time I notice it at all is in bright sunlight, which isn’t a big use case for me. Truthfully, neither model is all that great in the bright sun. We can’t ignore the fact, however, that the sapphire crystal is more resistant to scratching than the Ion-X glass. Tristan plays it off like the difference is marginal, but I’d rather have limited visibility in bright sun than permanent scratches on my screen.
2. The case doesn’t show scratches as easily.
Again, this is technically true. However, scratches on a watch case aren’t a big deal. All of my metal “dumb” watches have minor scratches all over the case and metal band. It’s patina. If I wanted my Apple Watch’s steel case shiny as new, I could polish out those minor scratches. If you do get a scratch on the Sport case, though, you’re stuck with it.
3. It is lighter and more comfortable to wear.
I take issue with this. Yes, the Sport is noticeably lighter. I noticed the difference immediately upon putting on my stainless steel Apple Watch. It did indeed feel heavier. For about 90 seconds. Then I didn’t even notice it was there. We’re not talking about a heavy watch here. Some even argue that the added weight makes it feel more like quality jewelry, but honestly, the difference is so slight that it doesn’t matter at all in terms of comfort.
4. Taptic feedback can be felt more easily.
He says he feels this, ok, but I didn’t notice any difference at all.
5. The price. Apple Watch Sport much cheaper than other models for the same functionality.
This is absolutely true. I have no counter-argument here, the price difference is huge and you get no more functionality in the higher-end models. If you are leaning towards an Apple Watch Sport, this is the reason to choose it, in my opinion.
