IDC Expects Apple Watch To Dominate Wearables Market Through 2019

December 17, 2015

Apple’s continued dominance of the growing wearables market is believed to continue through 2019, according to research firm IDC.

Sales of the Apple Watch have been increasing from the start, with the company currently projected to sell roughly 20 million Apple Watches in first 12 months of sales, according to some analysts. According to IDC’s projections, Apple will sell over 45 million Watches in 2019, representing a majority of what IDC believes will be roughly 88 million units total in that time.

Apple’s closest competitor, Android Wear, is anticipated to grow from 3.2 million units to 34.3 million units by 2019, representing just over 38 percent share. IDC believes Android Wear will eat into Apple’s total market share over the coming years.

Smartwatches are believed to grow as more technologies are added such as cellular data, more health sensors, and better third-party apps. At the moment, almost all smartwatches require a smartphone be within proximity in order to communicate information and help relay data. It is expect that this will change in the coming years.

Total wearables are expect to hit early 215 million units by 2019. These wearables include watches, fitness trackers, glasses and perhaps even smart clothing.

Apple has not yet divulged any information on shipments of their Watch, but many analysts have been digging around looking at various numbers, and it looks like the company is off to a good start.
