American Fashion Designer Thom Browne is Making A Strap for Apple Watch

November 17, 2015

Buried deep in an interview with The San Francisco Chronicle, fashion designer Thom Browne says he’s going to be making a strap for the Apple Watch.

The Chronicle asked Browne, who plans to give a talk this week at Stanford University, about his use of technology and how it fits into fashion.

“I’m, like, a generation and a half older than the people who are really growing up with technology,” he said. “I am doing a watch band for the Apple Watch. It’s something I don’t have myself, but I think it’s an amazing piece of machinery. It’s great to see people embracing it. It’s not something I need.”

What we don’t know is whether Browne is teaming up with Apple to create a band in the same way Hermès did or if he’s just planning to create Watch bands himself and sell them seperately. Given that the Browne brand isn’t as well known as the Hermès brand internationally, we wouldn’t be surprised if he simply plans to make high quality bands that would be sold both online and perhaps in Apple Stores.

Still, it’s interesting to see fashion brands adopt the concept of making bands for the Apple Watch, instead of attempting to make a watch themselves. I personally think this is the smarter move simply because most if not all fashion brands do not have the skills and talent required to compete with the Apple Watch, especially when it comes to technology.

I’m looking at you Tag Heuer.
