Apple Watch Complications To Keep Track Of Your Stuff?

Apple Watch Complications To Keep Track Of Your Stuff?

November 3, 2015

In the process of pimping out developer Neven Mrgan‘s cool Fallout-themed “custom” Apple Watch Face, Chris Mills of Gizmodo unwittingly came up with an awesome use case for Apple Watch.

First, the Tweet that started this train of thought:

Now for Mills’ off-hand contribution to my heretofore unconsidered excitement for the future:

This ‘hack’ is pretty damn simple: WatchOS 2 lets you make custom watchfaces: you just need to download this photo, sync it to your iPhone, then Force Touch on the image to set it as a custom watchface. Sure, you can’t use it to level up or check the contents of your pockets, but at least you’ll be looking good.

Of course, we already know all about watchOS 2’s pictures-as-Faces update, so that’s not what I’m talking about. Instead, I’m focused squarely on that last bit above: “Sure, you can’t use it to…check the contents of your pockets…”

And that’s true: You can’t. But in addition to watchOS 2 coming with these new wallpaper Faces, it also comes with the ability for app developers to introduce custom Complications. And while I’m not sure how many different Complications a given app is allowed to display on your Apple Watch Face of choice, most Faces do have slots for three or four of them. And that, I think, bodes well — indeed nigh perfect — for a “Pocket Contents” app and accessory system.

Think about it: When you leave the house, what are the bare essentials you feel naked without? For me, there’s my wallet, my shades, my knife, and my firearm. I dont leave home without them.

Except when I forget.

With Apple Watch’s potential RFID future and the diminutive, versatile nature of NFC/RFID beacons/tabs, I can foresee a mid-term market development that lets users slap a thin, durable RF sticker to their necessities of choice, sync them up with their iPhones, and have custom Apple Watch Complications tell them when they’ve got all their gear (or if they need to go back upstairs to the apartment and get their sunglasses before the Florida sun burns out their retinas). I, for one, would love to look down at my Apple Watch and see the following (apologies for the cruder-than-usual mockups — my iPad 3 recently suffered a tragic shattering, and Procreate Pocket is meh to the max):

Somebody better make this happen immediately.
