Is Apple Too Big To Not Fail?

Is Apple Too Big To Not Fail?

October 29, 2015

Charles Arthur, The Guardian:

Apple could be the victim of its own success

After the success of the iPhone, Apple may struggle to come up with new innovations that will dominate markets in quite the same way

That’s the headline and lede for Arthur’s post about Apple Watch perhaps marking the company’s newfound and troubling inability to discover and/or dominate tech’s “next big thing.”

But that’s a faulty premise, as it baselessly assumes that the next big thing will be as big or even bigger than the previous big thing — in this case, the smartphone. But the smartphone is only beginning its journey, and it represents, in my opinion, the logical conclusion of the connected individual. Wearables dont. Implantables dont. VR doesn’t. AR doesn’t. All those are neat and will have their places (big and small) in the madding crowd, but to presume that the next big thing should be defined by its ability to surpass the smartphone is foolhardy at best and dishonest at worst. The iPad was and continues to be huge (and it’s about to get huger), but it’s never challenged iPhone. Why would Apple Watch? Even with its deep health future, it’ll still be tethered to Apple’s core product.

Apple is The iPhone Company. They have absolutely no intention of being anything else.

Ever.
