Jony Ive Speaks On The 'Intertwining of Fashion and Tech'

October 20, 2015

Earlier this month, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that Apple would sponsor next years 2016 Gala and Constume exhibition, with Apple Design Chief, Jony Ive, serving as co-chair of the event. The theme for the 2016 event, which will take place on May 2, is “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.”

Today, in an interview with Jony Ive, Anna Wintour, and Costume Institute Curator Andrew Bolton the Wall Street Journal has shared a little more information on what we can expect from the event.

“Manus x Machina” is a theme that aims to explore crafting techniques that use such techniques like 3D printing as a way of designing clothing and things that we wear. Given that Apple has recently unveiled their first wearable, it makes sense that a company like Apple would be interested in such a theme.

Ive says Apple is just in the beginning stages of understanding fashion and technology:

“As products become more personal, something that is worn on the wrist put us in the space of fashion,” said Mr. Ive. He and Ms. Wintour were wearing versions of the Apple Watch Hermès, introduced this month.

“These are issues close to our hearts,” said Mr. Ive of the intertwining of fashion and technology. “Our understanding will temper and define future products we’re working on. We’re only starting.”

The Gala will be held on May 2, 2016 in New York City, where it tends to attract many celebrities and high-profile designers. Perhaps Apple will have debuted the Apple Watch 2 by then and will use the event the help promote it.
