John Hopkins Releases Apple Watch App EpiWatch To Help Track Seizures

October 19, 2015

EpiWatch, an app developed by John Hopkins, is the first ResearchKit app for use with the Apple Watch. Using the Watch’s sensors, combined with the iPhone app, the goal is to record and better understand epilepsy in a way that’s never been possible until now.

The app works bye collecting data from the smartwatch through the built-in sensors such as the gyroscope and accelerometer and is able to track seizures before, during and after. It’s also able to track you heart rate.

While this is the first app to do this, users shouldn’t completely rely on the app to track seizures. The goal for Hopkins to get as many epilepsy sufferers to come forward in order to help them build a complete system that works for everyone.

Professor of Neurology, Gregory Krauss, believes that in roughly two years the app will be able to send notifications to family and friends if someone is having a seizure. Users will also be able to view diaries and data, being able to compare symptoms and other seizures with people of a similar age.
