Apple Watch Sapphire is Produced By a Company in Russia
As first reported by Sputnik News, the Apple Watch uses sapphire produced by company called Monocrystal, a Russian company which is currently the largest synthetic sapphire manufacturer in the world. The company has seen its annual revenue rise $87 million and is one of the only sapphire manufacturers in the world to post an operating profit at the end of 2014.
According to the report, Apple uses Monocrystal’s 2-inch sapphire wafers, which account for roughly 40 percent of the company’s output. While this doesn’t mean that all of this sapphire is being used for Apple Watch, since the company supplies sapphire to other businesses, there’s a good chance much of it is.
Apple’s original supplier, GT Advanced Technologies, was suppose to be the one to supply the Apple Watch with all the sapphire need, but when the company went bankrupt, Apple had to quickly go elsewhere. Apple and GT have yet to resolve their issues in court.
