Stephen Hackett's Apple Watch Review

August 3, 2015

A great 2,800 word review from Stephen Hackett. He’s one of the few people who I think has taken the time to understand the device rather than rushing to get out a review for the sake of page views.

His pros and cons are totally valid and to be honest completely expected when you’re dealing with a first-generation product. Here’s what he concludes:

Apple Watch is much more about want than need. I can’t judge that for anyone but me, but it is something to think about. Apple Watch probably isn’t going to change your life, but it will make it better in a bunch of small ways. I find it a valuable addition to my life, but not everyone will, and that’s fine. After all, as Apple says, its the most personal device they’ve ever made.

Hackett is totally right. The Apple Watch is more about want than need, but couldn’t you say that about a lot of Apple’s products? Was the iPod a want or need? How about the first-generation iPhone or even the iPad Air or Mini today? Are any of these things truly needs? I’d argue they’re not. Outside of the iPhone, pretty much everything Apple makes is basically a want.

But that’s what Apple’s good at. They’re good at making something you want and they’re good at iterating that product so much that before long some people do consider it a need.

The sooner we understand this, the sooner we can move on.
