The Apple Watch Hasn't Killed Fitbit... Yet
A report from Bloomberg which uses Slice Intelligence data shows that Fitbit is still doing well nearly two months after the Apple Watch has gone on sale. In fact, according to Slice, Fitbits are currently outselling Apple Watches.
While this may surprise some people, it really shouldn’t. The Apple Watch starts at $349, whereas you can get into a Fitbit for as low as $55. Also, the Apple Watch is just starting to become available in Apple Stores. Up until last week, you had to pre-order the Apple Watch and wait at least a week or two to receive your shipment. As the availability of the Apple Watch increases, purchases will also likely increase.
There’s also the possibility that Apple starts selling the Apple Watch at other retailers such as Bloomingdales or Nordstrom’s. That in itself would increase the footprint and availability of Apple Watch. Again, not good for Fitbit.
Another interesting note is that people who have Apple Watches are no longer in the market for a Fitbit, while those who have a Fitbit are prime targets to purchase an Apple Watch. To me, this doesn’t sound like good news for Fitbit (or Jawbone). Plus, what happens 2-3 years from now when Apple either comes out with a lower cost model (think 5C) or sells the previous years model for less?
Fitbit may be okay today, but so was Blackberry when the iPhone came out in 2007. It was only a few years later when Blackberry started to feel the pain. I suspect the same will happen with Fitbit.
