Hardcore iPhone Users and the Apple Watch
Using the Apple Watch effectively necessarily means breaking some of those iPhone habits. Habits big and small. Habits like pulling out your iPhone for every notification to habits like opening a weather app to check the weather. I’m getting there, but it’s a process. And it’s going to be a long one.
In an interesting twist, this is why I believe Apple Watch is going to be easier for non-hardcore iPhone users to pick up. Someone new to iPhone won’t have all of this muscle memory to re-train. Some Apple Watch features which feel unintuitive to me may feel completely intuitive to someone who isn’t used to doing something a certain way on their iPhone.
I believe Siegler is exactly right. Most people, myself included, are not what you would call “hardcore” iPhone users. This is partly why I tend to think my perspective is a little bit different than the average “techie” and maybe why I haven’t found the Watch to be all that confusing. To put things in perspective, Snapchat is huge amongst what the tech-crowd would call “normals”, yet I’m constantly hearing the tech-crowd complain about how confusing it is. Why is that? My guess is that we’re used to asking the “why?” question a lot which leads us to scrutinize every little thing that crosses our path. That doesn’t mean that the Apple Watch couldn’t use improvement. But it may just mean that the tech-crowd may never come to appreciate the device, especially if they’re a power user.
