Will Work Invade Your Personal Life With Apple Watch?

April 23, 2015

Cadie Thompson, CNBC:

Just like how the smartphone brought employees ever closer to their employer, the Apple Watch will continue to drive the trend of never disconnecting from work.

“There is this shift that instead of work being this place that you go from 8 to 5, it becomes part of a lifestyle. A lot of places are embracing that ‘never off’ lifestyle, and I think that is a great fit for the Apple Watch,” said Dan Ward, co-founder of the mobile app development firm Detroit Labs. “Now you are becoming more and more connected with your employee.”

Bah!

This kind of goes against everything I personally want out of my Apple Watch. Luckily, most users will get to set up all their own notification standards themselves, permitting or blocking people and services on an individual, case-by-case basis. I shudder to think about Apple Watch at the enterprise level, though, where your boss (or worse, bosses) might get the final say on all the whos, whats, wheres, whens, whys, and hows of your snazzy new wearable. Still, if that’s the only way you’ll be able to get one of them, I suppose that’s a deal you’ve got to consider. Just don’t sell your soul for the thing. (As a Faust, I know all about that, and it’s rarely worth it in the end.)

If Mahmoud and AJ and Abdel et al. think I’m going to be easier to get in touch with once I’ve got my Apple Watch, they better think again.
