Apple Watch Has Entire Wearables Market On The Precipice

March 3, 2015

Matthew Chapman and Dan Sung, Wareable:

It will definitely kickstart the wearables market. It’s already doing well but this will take it to the next level. But, it’s probably make or break for the smartwatch space itself. If this Apple device flops, then I find it hard to see how anyone else is going to make it work.

I don’t think the reality of this has fully sunk in, particularly for the pundits of Apple’s presumed competitors. If Apple Watch fails, the entire smartwatch segment dies. On the surface, it’s just that simple. But the repercussions could go much deeper: If Apple Watch fails, the entire wearables category itself might be irrevocably derailed from mainstream adoption. And once that happens, I don’t know of a single manufacturer around today that would have any real chance of (or financial desire for) resurrecting that lost mindshare.

It might take an entire generation — a real, human one — to get it all back.
