Sunny Shapes is a Match 3 Game on the Apple Watch

August 4, 2016

I’ve been looking for a miniature match 3 game I could play on my wrist, and Sunny Shapes fits the bill. It’s not the same sort of match 3 gameplay as Candy Crush and its ilk, but it has its own charms.

There are two different modes, Puzzles and Marathon. A detailed tutorial explains exactly how to play each mode. The basic idea of both is to eliminate shapes by matching three of the same shape or color in a row. There are five columns which contain some shapes. A new shape appears at the top, and you choose which of the five columns you want it to fall down into. You play the piece by tapping the desired column. You can arrange your matches horizontally, diagonally, or vertically. Once you’ve made a match, all three shapes disappear. You’ll need to eliminate all of the shapes before the one of the columns fills up or time runs out.

This is a pretty complex game for such a tiny screen. You can save the current shape for later by tapping on the gray box in the top right corner if you want a different shape to drop. There are level ups, power ups, multipliers, and new daily puzzles. You can undo any move using Force Touch or the pause menu in the game.

You can also play the game on your iPhone, and your progress is synced between the devices. Gameplay is identical. But of course, it’s easier and more comfortable to play on the larger screen of the iPhone. It’s also worth noting that there are pop-up ads between levels on the iPhone while there are no ads on the Apple Watch.

Sunny Shapes is free on the App Store.
