Supply Chain Report Suggests Apple Watch 2 Coming This Fall

June 15, 2016

Supply chain sources cited by Digitimes suggests that Apple is close to launching a second-generation Apple Watch sometime this Fall.

Shipments of chips and components for the second-generation Apple Watch are set to begin in the third quarter, the sources indicated.

While we don’t know an exact time frame, Digitimes claims that production may begin sometime in July with an expected ship date sometime in September. This would make a ton of sense given that that’s when we’ll likely see Apple unveil the next-generation iPhone.

Interestingly, Digitimes believes that Apple is hoping for a significant boost in sales:

Orders for the upcoming Apple Watch have been higher-than-expected, said the sources. Judging from the orders, the sources estimated that about two million units of the new Apple Watch could be shipped monthly.

Apple has yet to unveil any sales numbers for the Apple Watch, though recent estimates peg sales somewhere around 13 million or so. Some reports expect Apple Watch sales to slow down this year mostly due to the fact that if Apple unveils a new Watch it won’t be until near the end of the year.

With watchOS 3 being unveiled a few days ago at WWDC, a second-generation Apple Watch with more sensors and a faster processor will likely solve some of the issues many current Apple Watch wearers have: Mainly speed.
I’m also hoping that the next generation Apple Watch includes things like GPS and perhaps even cellular connectivity.
Either way, we’re likely just a few months away from seeing what Apple has planned and my bet is that it will be substantial.
