Apple Hopes the Watch Will Sell Just Like the iPod. Seasonally.
The Apple Watch has been out for just over a year now and during yesterday’s investor call after Apple’s earnings, Apple CEO Tim Cook offered some interesting thoughts on the Watches sales pattern and what they expect.
Cook compared the Apple Watch to a previous hot selling item, the iPod, and believes that roughly 40 percent of Apple Watch sales will occur in the holiday quarter, or Q4.
Apple is estimated to have sold somewhere around 13 million units in the first year, so 40 percent would be just over 5 million units. Clearly Cook seems to be hinting that the Apple Watch 2 will not see a summer debut like some have predicted. Instead, it looks like we’ll be seeing the next-generation Watch in the fall, alongside the iPhone.
Rumors of what the next Apple Watch will feature have ranged from a FaceTime camera to more recently built-in cellular to allow for iPhone independence.
Speaking for myself, I’d take cellular activity over a FaceTime camera any day, but it looks like we’re going to have to wait about 6 more months before we see.
