Old News Is Funny News

Old News Is Funny News

September 28, 2015

Every day, I start my research the same way everyone else does: I do a Google search for “Apple Watch” and hit the “news” tab. And every day, the top, most-trafficked news story — archived just under the most recent stuff — is the same thing, this article from Wired. It’s the most popular piece ever written about Apple Watch.

And one of the most misleadingly titled.

You know the one. It’s called “iPhone Killer: The Secret History of the Apple Watch” by David Pierce. The author’s premise is essentially that the wearable will relegate iPhone to also-ran status by making users less reliant on their handsets. And while that latter point is a definite use case, the former implication is nonsense. That “killer” in the headline is what makes this piece so utterly amusing. Apple sells iPhones, and Apple Watch will never cannibalize or disrupt that business model.

Besides Apple’s push to get you upgrading your iPhone every year, here’s all the proof you need:

Apple® today announced it has sold more than 13 million new iPhone® 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models, a new record, just three days after launch.

13 million units in three days. For a freaking S model!

Maybe that’s why Apple Watch news is in the toilet right now.

Apple Watch an iPhone killer?

PffT.
