Yahoo Weather for Apple Watch Is Gorgeous

April 22, 2015

We’re just a few days away from folks getting their hands on Apple Watch and we’re seeing tons of apps hitting the App Store. One app in particular that’s stood out to me is, of all things, the Yahoo Weather app.

Yahoo Weather for Apple Watch

While Apple’s stock weather offering is probably sufficient for most people (“sufficient” seems to be Apple’s M.O. when it comes to mobile software), Yahoo’s simply looks better. The company’s use of fonts, colors, and icons is altogether cleaner and more sophisticated aesthetically.

In addition to its good looks, you also get a good bit of information at your disposal, including current actual temperature, a more subject measure as to what it “feels like,” wind speed readings, and — the gold standard — those ever-important chances of precipitation. There’s also a nice graphic detailing sunrise and sunset.

All in all, it’s the little things that add up to make these types of quick reference apps what they are. The more fun people have looking at them, the more likely they are to use such third-party solutions over Apple’s built-in, more barren utilities. And, frankly, that’s probably Apple’s intent: to offer users the bare minimum functionality for a given app or service while setting the table for developers to come in and pad out the feature set. After all, Apple does want its devs to shine –even when their weather app might be predicting cloudy, rainy days ahead.
